Beschreibung
Embriachi marriage casket with scenes from the story of Susanna and the Elders, Northern Italy, circa 1420–1440 (later alterations). The casket belongs to the production of the workshop or circle of Baldassare degli Embriachi and is executed in a combination of bone, wood, and certosina inlay.
The choice of the Susanna theme relates closely to the marital context in which such caskets generally functioned. In the late Middle Ages, the story was understood as an exemplum of female chastity and moral steadfastness, fitting within the broader repertoire of virtuous subjects frequently associated with marriage and female honour.
