Russian icon depicting Saint John the Baptist in camelfur and with a chalice with the body of Christ.
St.John has a banderole in his left hand with a prayer in old Slavic. This means that the icon was a part of a so called ‘Deesis row’. Deesis means intercession. The panel was in a row with Christ in the centre flanked by St John and St Mary praying for the wellbeing of the people of God.
His cape is dark brown with fine gold highlights (chrysography) The background is of a beautiful old gold colour and decorated with scratched floral patterns.
Made in Russia around 1880.
Fair condition: some minor damages in the cape of St.John and in the lower part.
