Description
Ivory relief depicting Mary with the Child Jesus
The relief shows mother Mary with her son Jesus carrying a globe as a sign of his rule over the world. The child Jesus rests his face against his mother’s veil. Mary’s oval face is striking and indicates an Asian origin. This could be Chinese or Indian areas that had already been Christianized in the 17th century – mainly by Jesuits – such as Macau or Goa. The folds of Mary’s robe are somewhat naive but seem to contain a vague reference to an older late Gothic example. The relief described here could have been made in the late 17th century or more likely in the 18th century.
