G\u00e9n\u00e9ralement faits de pierre, ils sont \u00e9galement connus sous le nom de lions de pierre ou shishi (\u77f3\u7345; sh\u00edsh\u012b). Ils sont appel\u00e9s en anglais familier lion dogs ou foo dogs \/ fu dogs. Le concept, qui a vu le jour et est devenu populaire dans le bouddhisme chinois, pr\u00e9sente une paire de lions tr\u00e8s stylis\u00e9s \u2013 souvent un m\u00e2le avec une balle qui repr\u00e9sente les \u00e9l\u00e9ments mat\u00e9riels et une femelle avec un petit qui repr\u00e9sente l'\u00e9l\u00e9ment d'esprit \u2013 qui \u00e9taient cens\u00e9s prot\u00e9ger le b\u00e2timent des influences spirituelles n\u00e9fastes et des personnes malveillantes qui pourraient repr\u00e9senter une menace. Utilis\u00e9s dans les palais et les tombeaux imp\u00e9riaux chinois, les lions se sont ensuite r\u00e9pandus dans d'autres r\u00e9gions d'Asie, notamment au Japon (voir komainu), en Cor\u00e9e, aux Philippines, au Tibet, en Tha\u00eflande, au Myanmar, au Vietnam, au Sri Lanka, en Inde, au N\u00e9pal, au Cambodge, au Laos et en Malaisie.
