How does one become an antique dealer?

For me, it started long before I was born. My great-grandmother taught my father and his twin brother the art of the trade—a lineage of knowledge passed down not in books, but through stories, instinct, and hands-on experience. She laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong family tradition.

Now, after ten years of being mentored by my father, I’m still learning every day. You can’t just read your way into this world—true expertise comes from handling objects, asking questions, making mistakes, and following your eye.

Some of the best lessons? I’ve learned them by dealing on my own—buying and selling with my own money, taking risks, facing loss, and celebrating wins. There`s no better teacher than experience.

It’s not always romantic—sometimes it’s just early mornings, dusty attics, and moments of doubt. But then you hold something in your hands and just know—this is it!

Set of Four Blue and White Plates – Kangxi Period (1662–1722)
Each plate delicately painted with four prunus branches in cobalt blue — a symbol of resilience, purity and renewal in Chinese culture. Each plate bears a mark on the underside.
Ø 22.2 cm. Various chips and hairlines consistent with age.

Provenance: From the collection of Dutch artist Jaap Nieuwenhuis (1927–2024) — painter, illustrator, and passionate collector. In his later years, Nieuwenhuis turned to watercolor still lifes, often featuring porcelain from his own collection, accompanied by patterned fabrics and fruit.
The last image shows one of his watercolors, in which one of these very plates is depicted.

Ivory Powder Flask, 17th Century
Carved from ivory and adorned with a rosette motif, this flask was used to carry gunpowder and worn as part of a huntsman’s or soldier’s gear.
