The position of Saint John – in front of Jezus and resting upon his lap – is rather interesting. The painter wanted to show that St. John is the disciple that Jezus loved – but normally the distance is some what greater.<\/p>\n
The two apostles at the front side of the table have strange twisted body – they are in so called ‘contraposition’ – a way of composition typical for the Mannerist-style. (last period of the Renaissance)<\/p>\n
The painting was made by an artist of the countryside in a rather na\u00efve style.<\/p>\n
Date; around 1590-1600. German school.<\/p>\n

In an impressive antique frame of later date. (dimensions 74 x 46 cm.)<\/p>\n
Small restauration in the lower right corner, some retouchings.<\/p>\n
