A lively glimpse into village life, signed Maasius. The work is attributed to Rotterdam artist Gerrit Maes (1649 – 1706, or later), a lesser-known but refined painter of the Dutch Golden Age. Maes, who Latinised his name as Maasius, created a small body of work characterised by animated genre scenes and atmospheric landscapes. Originally made in Kobe, Japan in the early 20th century, these hand-painted wooden figures were sold as souvenirs to Western visitors. Often charmingly animated, they’re a playful blend of folk art and early toy design.

Kobe, a bustling port city, was one of the first in Japan to open to international trade in the 19th century.
