Beschrijving

Archaic painting of the Last Supper. Jezus surrounded by his twelve apostels seated around a table with a dish with a roasted lamb, a chalice in gothic style and pieces of bread.

The position of Saint John – in front of Jezus and resting upon his lap – is rather interesting. The painter wanted to show that St. John is the disciple that Jezus loved – but normally the distance is some what greater.

The two apostles at the front side of the table have strange twisted body – they are in so called ‘contraposition’ – a way of composition typical for the Mannerist-style. (last period of the Renaissance)

The painting was made by an artist of the countryside in a rather naïve style.

In an impressive antique frame of later date. (dimensions 74 x 46 cm.)
