Pair of Ivory Putti Representing Hunting and Fishing
Circle of François Duquesnoy, France, 17th century
This finely carved pair of ivory putti symbolically represents the themes of hunting and fishing. The putto embodying hunting holds a game bird—possibly a pheasant or partridge—and carries a game bag, while the putto representing fishing carries two fish and a fishing rod slung over his shoulder.
Both the symbolic emphasis and the style of execution suggest a 17th-century origin within the circle of François Duquesnoy, a renowned Flemish sculptor active in Rome for most of his career. The sculptures have undergone restorations but remain in good overall condition.
