Ring-shaped Ivory Powder Flask with ‘Turkish head knot’ Motif
17th century
This ring-shaped powder flask is carved from ivory and decorated with an incised ‘Turkish head knot’ motif. Such symmetrical patterns gained popularity across many European countries during the Renaissance, inspired by designs from classical antiquity. The intricate linear design also reflects advances in technical instruments such as compasses, supporting a 17th-century dating.
The brass stopper, characterized by a typical horizontal structure, further confirms the flask’s 17th-century origin. This type of flask was worn as part of a huntsman’s or soldier’s gear to safely carry gunpowder.
