Virgin and Child, Flanders, early 17th century
Fruitwood sculpture depicting Mary holding the Christ Child. The calm expression, stylised hair and simple drapery reflect the transition from Renaissance to early Baroque. Intended for private devotion, the work embodies a personal and intimate form of religious practice.
Height: 28 cm.
Condition: Christ Child missing right arm, restorations to Mary’s hand and part of the leg and possibly face of the Christ Child.
