Kobe Doll or Kobe Toy
Originally made in Kobe, Japan in the early 20th century, these hand-painted wooden figures were sold as souvenirs to Western visitors. Often charmingly animated, they’re a playful blend of folk art and early toy design.
Kobe, a bustling port city, was one of the first in Japan to open to international trade in the 19th century.
In fair condition, damage to the left shoulder and some wear to the polychromy.
