New arrival! Embriachi marriage casket with scenes from the story of Susanna and the Elders, Northern Italy, circa 1420–1440 (later alterations). The casket belongs to the production of the workshop or circle of Baldassare degli Embriachi and is executed in a combination of bone, wood, and certosina inlay.

The choice of the Susanna theme relates closely to the marital context in which such caskets generally functioned. In the late Middle Ages, the story was understood as an exemplum of female chastity and moral steadfastness, fitting within the broader repertoire of virtuous subjects frequently associated with marriage and female honour.

SOLD! Attributed to Jan van Cleve III (1646–1716), this expressive 17th-century Flemish painting depicts Saint Margaret the Virgin, shown with bound hands and her gaze lifted heavenward.

Saint Margaret of Antioch was among the most widely venerated female saints of the Middle Ages and counted as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, invoked in times of illness, danger and distress. According to her legend, she was swallowed by a dragon sent to torment her in prison, yet emerged unharmed when the cross she carried burst the creature open. This miraculous escape made Margaret a powerful patron saint of pregnant women and childbirth.

A rare wooden casket with polychrome and gilded pastiglia relief, Italy, 15th century.

The box is adorned with four finely executed scenes from the life of an unknown martyr.

Dimensions: 15.5 × 10.4 × 9 cm

Overall in good condition for its age, with minor losses to the surface and possible retouching to the polychromy. The ball feet are likely later additions.

Copy after Gerard ter Borch (II) (1617–1681), Boy Fleaing a Dog, painted around 1700.

A quietly observed domestic scene, remarkable for the tender way the boy, possibly Ter Borch’s half-brother Moses, is shown caring for the dog. The close, almost intimate relationship between child and animal takes centre stage, an unusually empathetic subject in 17th-century genre painting.

Oil on canvas, professionally restored, presented in a modern frame in 17th-century style.
