“Sancta Maria de Pace” (Our Lady of Peace)

A rare depiction of “Regina Pacis”, Queen of Peace, inspired by the Carmelite devotion at Maria vom Frieden in Cologne. Mary and the Christ Child, both crowned and dark-skinned, hold olive branches as symbols of peace. Around them, banners inscribed “Friden mit Got,” “Friden mit dem Gewissen,” and “Friden mit den Necsten” proclaim peace with God, with one’s conscience, and with one’s neighbour.
An exceptional and uncommon image within early modern Marian devotion.
