Miniature Altar with Mother Mary with infant Jezus

Miniature Altar with Mother Mary with infant Jezus in Renaissance style.

This altar - used for private devotion - was made in the 17th century and is dated on the base 1657, presumably in Flanders or Germany

Several elements such as the pillars at each side of Mother and child, the square base of the pillars, the top ormanent in the form of a trapesium, and the 'wings' at the sides reflect the renaissance style-period.

The upper top ornament and several rosettes are missing, red velvet renewed.

Anonymous, 18th century
Inspired by a painting by Petrus Staverenus (1610/1612 – 1654-07-28/1664-07-28) from a series of Five Senses 'Taste: A laughing man with an upturned glass'

The original serie by Staverenus consists of five paintings depicting the personification of the five senses: Sight: A young woman pointing; Hearing: A man counting coins; Smell: A laughing man smoking a pipe; Taste: A laughing man with an upturned glass (image 2)

Petrus Staverenus (active 1634 – 1654) was a Dutch painter, who painted tronies in the manner of Frans Hals and Adriaen Brouwer. Little is known of his life. Today he is best known for engravings by Abraham Blooteling, Jan Verkolje and others, mostly depicting his expressive heads of people in various activities.

A similar gesture is seen in the painting 'The Fingernail Test / Boy with a glass and a lute' by Frans Hals or Judith Leyster: The fingernail Test (image 3) The Fingernail Test has been attributed to either Frans Hals or Judith Leyster, painted in 1626 and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City. The painting is also known as Boy with a glass and a lute and shows a young lute-player wearing a beret and a draped cloak over his chest, tilting his glass to show it is empty while facing the viewer in order to say "time is up". In the 17th century, the gesture of tipping the glass down to see if a drop of wine appears on a fingernail was a method to show one wanted a refill. The scene is often shown with figures in theatrical costumes.

John A. A. Berrie was mainly a portrait painter, he wasborn near Manchester and studied at Bootle and Liverpool Schools of Art, at Hubert Herkomer’s School at Bushey, then in Paris. Exhibited at RA, with RCamA of which he became a full member in 1923 and extensively with Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, which holds portraits of local worthies by him. Had a solo exhibition at Walker’s Galleries, 1936. Among his portraits were King George V and Winston Churchill. Lived in London, Harrogate and finally Johannesburg, South Africa.
