Unknown artist of the XVII-XVIII century, 'Saint Jerome Hears the Trumpet of the Last Judgment', Signed and dated lower left (on the base of the crucifix) Herm. Veltman fecit 1719, Oil on canvas.

Depicted is Saint Jerome in a cave with a crucifix, a lion, a book, a red cardinal's hat, holding a skull. He is startled by the sound of an angels trumpet calling the Last Judgment. He pounds his chest with a rock. Saint Jerome's self-flagellation with a rock was a practice of asceticism and mortification aimed at taming his internal desires and resisting temptation. This act of self-inflicted pain was intended to purify his body of impure urges that contradicted his religious doctrine.
Saint Jerome is often depicted with a lion in art due to a popular legend. The story, recounted in the Golden Legend, tells of Jerome living near a monastery when a lion came limping into their midst. The other monks fled, but Jerome calmly approached the lion and discovered it had a thorn in its paw. Jerome removed the thorn, and the grateful lion became his devoted companion.

Paintings of Saint Jerome were a popular subject in the 17th century. Jusepe de Ribera, also called Lo Spagnoletto, created two etchings depicting Saint Jerome in the wilderness being interrupted by the sound of a trumpet. One of Ribera’s earliest depictions of Saint Jerome dates from 1616–17 and was painted for one of his patrons in Naples, Pedro Téllez Girón, Duke of Osuna. In that work, Saint Jerome is depicted in meditation holding a skull and lying on the ground in his cave listening to the trumpet of the Last Judgement played by an angel. Another canvas of 1626 in The Hermitage, St. Petersburg, depicts the same subject but with a different composition. In that work, the saint, surrounded by his symbols including the lion, is interrupted in his labors by an angel with a musical instrument.

Displaying a rich tapestry of the Dutch Golden Age’s penchant for idyllic visions, this late 17th-century landscape painting invites viewers into a meticulously crafted panorama. Signed “Maasius” in the mid-frame, the work is highly likely from the hand of Rotterdam painter Gerrit Maes (1649-1706 or later), of whom only a small body of work is currently known. Gerrit Maes, like his brother Pieter van Mase (ca. 1650-1703), signed his works with the Latinized “Maasius”. While more works by Pieter are known, the paintings of the brothers share similarities in their handling. However, Gerrit’s style is considered more refined, making him a strong candidate as the painter of this particular landscape.

Hogenban, near Overschie (Rotterdam), was home to the brothers Pieter and Gerrit van Maes, also known as Maasius, who maintained a painting studio and actively engaged in the art trade. Gerrit’s connection to the landscape painter Johannes Penninks (1627-after 1698) (Gerrit was married to Maria Pennis), who may have spent some time in Italy as ‘Il Pennito’, may have influenced his style.
Living near the Schie canal, Gerrit would have been familiar with the comings and goings of trekschuiten (towboats) and the activities around the Veerhuis (ferry house). From their home in Hogenban, across the Groote Brug from Overschie, the Maes brothers had a view of the ships that moored to pay toll. It is conceivable that Gerrit Maes, in creating this “richly adorned landscape,” drew upon his observations of the Overschie area, infusing the painting with elements of the local scenery, such as the waterways or the general atmosphere of the region.

A wooden casket with polychrome and gilded "pastiglia" relief decor showing 4 scenes from the life of an unknown martyr, Italy XVth century.

Dimensions: 15.5 x 10.4 x 9 cm.

Overall in good condition for its age, some defects to the decor and possibly some retouching to the polychromy, ball feet presumably of later date.

*In 2002, the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida held an exhibition of Pastiglia Boxes: Hidden Treasures of the Italian Renaissance from the collection of the Galleria Nazionale d'arte antica in Rome, and an 80-page exhibition catalogue was published in English and Italian.

Rare antique bronze cooking pot or grape with 4 medaillons.

This cookingpot is decorated with a large central medaillon with entwined initials MARIA (diameter 6 cm.)

This central medaillon is surrounded by three smaller medaillons with the three crowned kings heads referring to the three kings that visited Jezus in Bethlehem.

At the right and left of the central medaillon the figures 1 - 5 - 1 - and P or 9 (?) probably referring to the year 1519 (?)

The three feet of the cooking pot are in the shape of mascarons or human faces. The handle of the cooking pot is of wrought iron, possibly of later date.

Weight: 3.5 kilogrammes.
