Hendrik Valk was a painter and graphic artist from the twentieth century. At an early age he experimented with stylization and abstraction, and around 1918-1920 Theo van Doesburg invited him to join the artists of De Stijl. However, Valk chose to continue following his own path. He developed his characteristic, clearly stylized style, in which he stuck to the representation of visible reality. In sober straight lines and areas of color without depth, he reduced these to the essentials. He eliminated everything superfluous. With the exception of the 1930s, when he worked more realistically for a period of time, Valk stuck to that vision throughout his life.
