Statue in oak of Saint Agnes with lamb in neo-gothic style

Saint Agnes (292-304) was born in Rome, dedicated to the pagan Gods of Rome and brought to the temple of Minerva. She refused to alter her christian beliefs, was raped and martyred. She is depicted with a lamb because the latin word for lamb ‘agnus’ sounds like the Greek word for ‘pure’. The feast-day of St.Agnes is 21 januari.

This statue is made around 1870 by a skilled craftsman, probably for a church or cloister. Originally it has been painted.

There are some restorations at the right ear and the muzzle of the lamb; otherwise in good condition.

Dimensions: 93 x 29 x 20 cm.
