Description

Ivory relief rounded at the top, depicting The Mockery of Christ. Presumably Flanders 17th century.

Height: 11 cm.

Provenance: Dutch private collection

* With CITES Certificate for Commercial Activities within the EU

In good restored condition

This deep relief depicting the Mockery of Christ shows characteristics of
sculpture in a late Renaissance style. Especially the heavy and
broad and naturalistically depicted chest of Jesus points to this. The relief is most likely based on a
copper engraving or a painting by a late 16th century artist and made by a well-trained Flemish or German sculptor in the first half of the 17th century.
