Description
Excellent antique copy of the ‘Madonna Rucellai,’ the famous painting made by the Sienese painter Duccio di Buoninsegna (1255-1318/1319) for the church of Santa Maria Novella at Florence.
The composition of Mother Mary, the child Jesus and the throne on wich they sit is exactly the same as in the original. But the six angels surrounding Mother Mary on the original are not depicted in this painting.
Our painting is made in the first half of the 19th century as a souvenir for rich ‘Grand Tour’ tourists.
The tempera painting on an old panel with old wormholes (not active) is executed so well that the original buyers – often English nobles – must have believed to purchase an original work from the 13th century.
This work of art is still almost 200 years old and has a beautiful background and frame of goldleaf and very fine craquelure.
Dimensions: 50.7 x 29.5 x 5 cm.
