[:nl]Pelgrimskruis gemaakt als souvenir uit het Heilige Land in A.D. 1772.

Dit type pelgrimskruisen werd al sinds de 18e eeuw gemaakt door christelijke inwoners van Bethlehem voor pelgrims uit Europa als souvenir om mee naar huis te nemen.

Het kruis is gemaakt van het hout van de olijfboom en ingelegd met parelmoer in verschillende patronen zoals bloemen, Griekse kruisen, een Latijns kruis en spijkers die verwijzen naar de kruisiging. In de voet van het kruis is het centrale ornament een ovaal stuk gegraveerd parelmoer met een kruis, drie spijkers en I.H.S. afkorting voor Jesus Hominem Salvator (Jezus de Verlosser van de mensheid) Het kruis en de voet hebben randen van wit been.

Het Corpus Christi en een schedel onder het corpus zijn gemaakt van zilver.

Op de achterkant staan ​​enkele onduidelijke inscripties; we kunnen DD lezen (initialen eigenaar) en een datum 1772.

Enkele van de ingelegde delen van parelmoer – bijvoorbeeld de helft van een bord met INRI – ontbreken. (zie foto’s)

Dit pelgrimskruis komt uit de collectie van een klooster in Zuid-Nederland.

This type of pilgrimscrosses was made by Christian inhabitants of Bethlehem since at least the 18th century for pilgrims from Europe as a souvenir to take home.

The base of the cross is from the wood of the olive tree. It is inlaid with different patterns like flowers, Greek crosses , a Latin cross and nails referring to the crucifixion. In the base of the cross the central ornament is an oval piece of engraved mother of pearl with a cross, three nails and I.H.S. short for Jesus Hominem Salvator (Jesus the Saviour of mankind) The cross and base have rims made of white bone.

The Corpus Christi and a skull beneath the corpus are made of silver.

On the back there are some indistinct inscriptions; we can read D.D. (initials owner) and a date 1772.

Some of the inlaid parts of mother of pearl – for example the half of a sign with INRI – are missing. (see photographs)

This pilgrims cross comes from the collection of a cloister in the Southern part of the Netherlands.
